LEADERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The Speaker of the House presides over the House of Representatives. The Speaker is elected by the majority party caucus followed by confirmation of the full House. In addition to presiding over the body, the Speaker is also its chief leadership position, and controls the flow of legislation and committee assignments. Other House leaders, such as the majority and minority leaders, are elected by their respective party caucuses.

Joe Aresimowicz

House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz was first elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 2004 to represent the 30th House District, which includes the towns of Berlin and Southington. Following his re-election to a fifth term in 2012, his colleagues elected him to serve as Majority Leader of the House of Representatives for the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 legislative sessions. In 2016 he was elected House Speaker for the 2017-2018 legislative sessions.

Joe Aresimowicz

House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz was first elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 2004 to represent the 30th House District, which includes the towns of Berlin and Southington. Following his re-election to a fifth term in 2012, his colleagues elected him to serve as Majority Leader of the House of Representatives for the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 legislative sessions. In 2016 he was elected the seat of House Speaker for the 2017-2018 legislative sessions.

Matt Ritter

State Representative Matt Ritter was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 2010 to represent the 1st House District of Hartford. Prior to his service as Majority Leader, he served for two years as Co-Chair of the Public Health Committee. In 2016 he was unanimously elected by his Democratic colleagues to serve as the new House Majority Leader for the 2017-2018 legislative sessions.

After serving as Deputy Republican House Leader from 2007 through 2014, members of the Connecticut General Assembly House Republican Caucus unanimously chose her to serve as House Republican Leader for the 2015-2016, and again for the 2017-2018 legislative sessions.
