Mary Kate Lowndes

Director of Development and Special Initiatives
Connecticut Commission on Children

Ms. Lowndes joined the Commission on Children in 2008. As director of development and special initiatives, she serves as the Commission's point person on grants, budget, children in disasters, childhood obesity, low birth weight babies, and SNAP E&T. She also co-chairs the state's Child Emergency Preparedness Committee and serves on the Steering Committee of the CT Coalition Against Childhood Obesity.

Prior to joining the Commission on Children, Ms. Lowndes was the first executive director of the nonprofit Holcomb Farm Learning Center, an organization dedicated to art and environmental education, the celebration of cultural diversity, and the preservation and low-impact use of open space. She was responsible for strategic planning, budget and resource management, fund raising, facility conditions, community outreach, special events, and more.

She came to the Learning Center from the U.S. Peace Corps. Ms. Lowndes served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, country desk officer in Peace Corps Headquarters for the Caribbean Region, and deputy director/acting country director for Peace Corps/Dominican Republic. She was deeply immersed in community development, program and training design, volunteer support, strategic planning, grant management, and international relations.

Ms. Lowndes is a native of Connecticut. She was raised in Simsbury, graduated from Simsbury High School, and attended the University of Michigan and the American University, where she received a bachelor's degree.

Her community work includes active member of her local PTO, Granby Middle School PAC president, player agent and other roles with the Granby Little League, team manager for Granby Youth Soccer/Rovers, embassy representative on the American School Board, and founding board member of Princess and the Prom Inc.

Ms. Lowndes lives in Windsor and is the proud parent of Patrick, who studies broadcast journalism at Emerson College and plays on the Emerson varsity soccer and basketball teams.
