PRESERVATION OF AMERICAN ELM TREES IN STATE HIGHWAY RIGHTS-OF-WAY |
|||
By: James J. Fazzalaro, Principal Analyst | |||
You asked if the Department of Transportation (DOT) has a program for chemical intervention to preserve American Elm trees in its highway rights-of-way. You also wanted to know if we could identify any nearby states that have such a program.
This report is a written follow-up to information previously provided to you via e-mail, but which you apparently did not receive successfully. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused.
The Connecticut DOT has no chemical spraying intervention program for preserving American Elm trees along its highway rights-of-way. It could not identify any other states with such programs. We contacted officials at the Federal Highway Administration for assistance, but they were not aware of any specific state programs either.
Officials in state highway agencies in other states, including Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island, were not aware of any program of this kind in their respective states. The officials we contacted were not familiar with any such programs that might exist on a lower governmental level, such as in individual counties.
