RE: Nursing Homes with Alzheimer's Units
You asked (1) how many nursing homes in the state have special care units for people with Alzheimer's disease and (2) how many beds are in these units. Special care units are separate sections in nursing homes for residents with Alzheimer's and related dementias. According to the National Institute on Aging, the idea behind them is that people with dementia might benefit from specially designed programs or environments different from those provided in a traditional nursing home. We have enclosed a portion of a Congressional report that more fully describes these units and their prevalence nationally.
According to the three Connecticut chapters of the Alzheimer's Association, 58 nursing homes in the state have units serving people with an Alzheimer's or related diagnosis. Of those, 37 have special care units, and 20 accept residents with these diagnoses but do not have separate units devoted exclusively to their care.1 We were unable to get information from one facility.
Table 1 lists the 37 homes that have separate units serving these residents. They have a total of 1,672 beds: 813 in Northern Connecticut, 371 in Fairfield County, and 488 in the South Central region.

Homes Without Special Care Units
Twenty of the facilities that the state chapters list as having Alzheimer's units reported that they do not have special care units but do accept residents with these diagnoses. Table 2 lists these homes and the services that they described to us.

1 The chapters apparently do not use the same criteria in compiling their lists: the South Central chapter's list included only facilities with Alzheimer's special care units, while the Northern Connecticut and Fairfield County lists also include homes that care for such residents in mixed skilled care units.
