Laura Lee Simon

Laura Lee Simon is a lifelong advocate for children. Her public service includes leadership roles in numerous public, private, local, state, and national organizations and special initiatives to promote programs and policies in the interests of children and their families. As a social activist, she has brought together coalitions from diverse disciplines and sectors of society to promote social change in fields that include education, health, child care, child welfare, and intercommunity relations.

Ms. Simon is a founding member of the Connecticut Commission on Children. After serving as its chair for 10 years, she is now chair emerita and serves as chair of the Embedding Prevention Task Force, chair of the multimedia public education campaign "Kids for Connecticut," member of the Commission's Executive Committee, and chair of the Commission's Nominating Committee.

She also served as chair of Connecticut Broadcasting Inc. and is now trustee emerita, serving on the organization's Strategic Planning Committee. She was vice president of the Connecticut Association for Human Services and is an advisor to the Stepping Stones Museum for Children as chair of its Community Partnership Council, and a founder and honorary member of the Bridgeport Child Advocacy Coalition.

She has been involved with numerous other state and national organizations, including as: the Connecticut chair of a six-state National Crime Prevention Council initiative to develop policies that promote healthy, safe, smart, caring communities for children to grow; as chair of the Committee on Public Expenditures for Connecticut's children to develop the first state children's budget in the country; as a trustee of the Southport Institute for Policy Analysis, a think tank dedicated to non-partisan analysis of public and private issues in the fields of federal social policy, education policies, and philanthropy; as Connecticut chair of the White House Conference on Families; and a chair for 15 years of the Stauffer Westport Fund, supporting innovative services for children and their families.
