HB 5274

AN ACT CONCERNING THE TERMS OF THE STATE POET LAUREATE AND THE STATE TROUBADOUR.

SUMMARY

This bill generally aligns the requirements for selecting the state poet laureate and official state troubadour, both of whom are selected under current law by the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD).

The bill requires the DECD commissioner to designate individuals for both positions to a three-year term. As the commissioner currently does for the poet laureate, she must make that designation with recommendations from the Culture and Tourism Advisory Committee. The bill allows her to fill a vacancy in either position by appointment for the term's balance.

Current law does not specify a term for the poet laureate, but provides a two-year term for the state troubadour. In both cases, current law makes no provision for filling a vacancy.
