SPONSORS OF BILL:

Judicial Branch

REASONS FOR BILL:

Under current law, parties to a divorce action may waive the 90-day waiting period if they have reached agreement on all issues. However, if one spouse does not respond the spouse seeking the divorce is left waiting for months for their case to be heard. This bill provides a more expedient divorce process for a spouse who has been abandoned or whose spouse refuses to participate

RESPONSE FROM ADMINISTRATION/AGENCY:

Judicial Branch supports the bill. They summarized the reasons for the bill and outline how this new process would work. They also provide a section by section summary of the bill.

NATURE AND SOURCES OF SUPPORT:

CCADV, Liza Andrews, Director of Public Policy and Communications believes the bill protects victims from having the 90-day waiting period waived without their consent while also providing those victims whose spouse refuses to cooperate in divorce proceedings with a more expedient means of obtaining a divorce.

NATURE AND SOURCES OF OPPOSITION:
