SPONSORS OF BILL:

Veterans' Affairs Committee

Rep. Sean Scanlon, 98th Dist.

Sen. Mae Flexer, 29th Dist.

Rep. Patrick S. Boyd, 50th Dist.

REASONS FOR BILL:

This bill waives the Department of Motor Vehicles fee for receiving a Military Order Purple Heart license plate to those who are members of the organization. It is important to note that service members or veterans that have been awarded the Purple Heart medal are not automatically eligible for this license plate. The plate reflects recognition of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Organization and not medal recipients directly.

RESPONSE FROM ADMINISTRATION/AGENCY:

None Expressed

NATURE AND SOURCES OF SUPPORT:

State Representative Scanlon, Sean

Rep. Scanlon testified there are 27 states that issue the plates for free to veterans. Currently, Connecticut is the only state in New England that charges a fee for veterans to obtain a Purple Heart license plate. Rep. Scanlon went on to say that each Purple Heart plate costs $10 and said there are 700 registered Purple Heart veteran plates in the state.

NATURE AND SOURCES OF OPPOSITION:
