AN ACT IMPOSING A TAX ON SUGARY SOFT DRINKS AND CANDIES.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:
That chapter 219 of the general statutes be amended to impose a tax of one cent per ounce on soft drinks, both carbonated and noncarbonated, that are high in calories and sugar and candies that are high in calories and sugar, the proceeds from which will be used to (1) address childhood obesity through prevention efforts, (2) fund municipalities throughout the state, and (3) contribute to the Governor's Scholarship program, as described in section 10a-173 of the general statutes.
Statement of Purpose:
To raise and evenly distribute revenue for childhood obesity, municipalities and the Governor's Scholarship program.
