REASONS FOR BILL:

This bill would study Connecticut's colleges and universities to find the best practices for the veterans OASIS program. The various OASIS programs run independently on individual campuses to help ensure that veterans' are aware of the benefits that they can use to further their education in the civilian world.

RESPONSE FROM ADMINISTRATION/AGENCY:

Senator Beth Bye: Is in favor of this bill, as it would create a standard network in the state colleges and university system for staffing at each campus' veterans OASIS where none currently exists.

NATURE AND SOURCES OF SUPPORT:

Karen DeBari, Veterans OASIS Operator, Tunxis Community College: Is in favor of this bill, noting that the OASIS system at Tunxis Community College has benefitted both the college and the veteran population and has become a place for veterans to have an on campus support system.

Barbara S. Bunk, Ph.D., Connecticut Psychological Association: Is in favor of this bill, as it would ease the transition from service member to student and avoid some of the difficulties of such a transition.
