HB-5117

AN ACT CONCERNING GENETICALLY-ENGINEERED FOODS.

AMENDMENT

LCO No.: 5102

File Copy No.: 307

House Calendar No.: 248

OFA Fiscal Note

SEE BELOW

The amendment strikes the underlying bill and its associated fiscal impact.

The amendment removes the requirement that the Department of Agriculture (DAG) must adopt regulations to establish best practice for farmers who cultivate certain genetically-engineered crops, and instead makes this provision permissive.

To the extent DAG chooses to establish these regulations, significant costs may be incurred to the agency to hire a consultant with the scientific knowledge required to draft the regulations. If DAG opts not to adopt these regulations, the amendment would not result in any fiscal impact to the state.

The preceding Fiscal Impact statement is prepared for the benefit of the members of the General Assembly, solely for the purposes of information, summarization and explanation and does not represent the intent of the General Assembly or either chamber thereof for any purpose. In general, fiscal impacts are based upon a variety of informational sources, including the analyst's professional knowledge. Whenever applicable, agency data is consulted as part of the analysis, however final products do not necessarily reflect an assessment from any specific department.
