OLR BACKGROUNDER: INMATES HELD ON BOND

By: Christopher Reinhart, Chief Attorney

You asked about accused inmates held on bond, including crimes they are accused of and the amount of their bonds.

SUMMARY

The Department of Correction (DOC) provided us with a breakdown of accused inmates incarcerated on January 25, 2010 by the most serious offense they are accused of and their bond amount, within certain ranges.

On January 25, 2010, there were 3,840 accused inmates held in DOC facilities on bond. Table 1 shows the breakdown of this population within a range of bond amounts and the percentage of the total accused population held on bond in each range. Approximately one-quarter of all inmates (24.1%) were held on bond of $25,000 or less and about one-third were being held on bond of $25,000 to $100,000.
