Explanation

The amendment increases from 10 years to 20 years the mandatory minimum prison sentence for assaulting a pregnant woman resulting in termination of pregnancy.1 Since passage of PA 03-1, which established this crime, through the end of FY 08, there has been one conviction. To the extent that the bill increases the terms of imprisonment for this crime, the Department of Correction could incur significant costs in FY 20 and beyond.

The preceding Fiscal Impact statement is prepared for the benefit of the members of the General Assembly, solely for the purposes of information, summarization and explanation and does not represent the intent of the General Assembly or either chamber thereof for any purpose. In general, fiscal impacts are based upon a variety of informational sources, including the analyst's professional knowledge. Whenever applicable, agency data is consulted as part of the analysis, however final products do not necessarily reflect an assessment from any specific department.

1 The amendment leaves unchanged the maximum term of imprisonment provided for under current law, which is 25 years.
