SPONSORS OF BILL:

Rep. Craig Miner

REASONS FOR BILL:

This bill would require DEP to maintain the current amount of land where hunting is permitted.

RESPONSE FROM ADMINISTRATION/AGENCY:

Gina McCarthy, Commissioner of Department of Environmental Protection, supports this bill. DEP believes that it is very important to maintain hunting opportunities on State land where hunting is permitted.

NATURE AND SOURCES OF SUPPORT:

Robert T. Crook, Director, Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, supports this bill. All outdoor recreationalists will benefit from this bill. There is also no cost associated with this bill. This bill requires that states maintain at least the level of available public hunting land that currently exists. Laws similar to this have already been enacted in Illinois, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, West Virginia and Georgia. Hunting is a fundamental element of conservation and this bill not only benefits sportsmen and the environment, but business owners as well. Hunters have always supported wildlife management through licenses, tag fees and land management to promote managed populations. The results of our financial support and efforts are readily apparent in the diverse and abundant species in the state.
