POSSESSION AND SALE OF DRUGS—PRISON POPULATION

You asked about the number of people incarcerated for possession or sale of drugs.

The Department of Correction (DOC) prison population includes both sentenced and unsentenced inmates. On October 21, 2008, DOC facilities held 19,537 inmates. Using DOC statistics which list each inmate once under the most serious offense for which he or she was sentenced or is awaiting trial or sentencing, 19.5% of the prison population on October 21, 2008, or 3,803 inmates, had a drug offense as their most serious offense (see OLR Report 2008-R-0589 for a breakdown of the prison population by offense categories).
