BREAKDOWN OF PRISON POPULATION BY OFFENSE CATEGORIES

By: Christopher Reinhart, Senior Attorney

You asked for a breakdown of the prison population by categories.

The Department of Correction (DOC) prison population includes both sentenced and unsentenced inmates. On October 21, 2008, DOC facilities held 19,537 inmates. 21% of these were unsentenced. Using statistics provided by DOC, we grouped inmates into a number of categories. Each inmate is listed once under the most serious offense for which he or she was sentenced or is awaiting trial or sentencing.
