ELECTIONS--PARTY-DOMINANT DISTRICTS

You asked for:

1. a list of party-dominant districts in 2005, the earliest date for which this data is readily available and

2. the percentage of votes received by dominant and non-dominant major party, minor party, and petitioning party candidates in these districts from 1990 to 2006.

As used in the Citizens' Election Program statutes (i.e., CGS § 9-705 (e) and (f)) and this report, “party-dominant districts” mean those districts in which the political party with the most members exceeds the party with the next largest membership by at least 20%.

PARTY-DOMINANT DISTRICTS IN 2005

Using August 2005 data from the Office of the Secretary of the State, we found that nine Senate districts (25%) and 48 House districts (32%) were party-dominant districts. In each instance, the dominant party was one of the two major political parties (i.e., either Democratic or Republican). In fact, the Democratic Party was dominant in all nine Senate districts and 45 of the 48 House districts. The Republican Party was dominant in the remaining three House districts. The party-dominant districts included large cities such as Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven, and Waterbury and small towns such as Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck, and Woodbridge. The small towns are all in Senate district 17.

Using the Secretary of the State's Statement of Vote data, we found that the percentage of votes received by candidates in party-dominant districts ranged from 100% in districts where candidates ran unopposed to less than 1% received by petitioning or write-in candidates in contested races. In each contested race, the dominant major party candidate won.

Table 1 shows the highest percentage of votes received by minor party candidate (excluding cross-endorsed candidates) broken down by year and district. Table 2 shows the highest percentage of votes received by petitioning and write-in candidates broken down by year and district. Table 3 shows the total number of votes cast by district, the percentage of votes received by party and candidate status (i.e., petitioning and write-in), and the winning candidate by party in each race. The winning candidates are highlighted.
