You asked about the number of unsentenced inmates and their percentage of the total prison population over the last two years.
SUMMARY
The Office of Fiscal Analysis maintains information on the daily incarcerated population, based on information provided to them by the Department of Correction. Using this information, we determined that from January 1, 2006 through March 1, 2008, the unsentenced prison population varied from a low of 4,015 inmates on March 28, 2007 to a high of 4,777 on October 31, 2006. As a percentage of the total prison population, the unsentenced population varied from 21.3% on March 28, 2007 to 24.9% on four dates between August 29 and September 8, 2006.
UNSENTENCED POPULATION ON THE FIRST OF EACH MONTH
Table 1 displays the unsentenced, sentenced, and total prison population on the first of each month from January 1, 2006 to March 1, 2008. It also shows the percentage of the total prison population that is made up of unsentenced inmates on each date.
