SPONSORS OF BILL:

General Law Committee

REASONS FOR BILL:

To allow the retail sale of beer, wine and alcoholic liquor at certain institutions of higher learning.

RESPONSE FROM ADMINISTRATION/AGENCY:

Jerry Farrell, Jr., Commissioner, State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP)

DCP would like further information “…as to which institutions would be included in Conn. Gen. Stat. 10a-34 before rendering an opinion on this legislative proposal. The types and number of such institutions would be needed in order to render an informed opinion.” Written testimony.

NATURE AND SOURCES OF SUPPORT:

Michael J. Morand, Associate Vice President, Yale University Office of New Haven and State Affairs

Supports House Bill 7141 that “…makes technical changes to the General Statutes. Currently, universities in general are allowed to apply to the DCP for permits for sale of retail beer and wine and only the University of Connecticut is able to apply for such a permit for retail sale of alcoholic liquor. This bill makes a small technical change so that such a permit, now available only to the University of Connecticut, can also be made available for golf courses at other institutions of higher education.” Written and Oral testimony.

NATURE AND SOURCES OF OPPOSITION:

Nothing submitted.
