ALCOHOL BAN ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES

You asked how many out-of-state college campuses in the country ban alcohol use and possession.

We contacted several national organizations and did an Internet search of colleges. As far as we were able to determine, no one has compiled a list of dry campuses. The list below is based on a Connecticut Department of Higher Education survey, a survey of independent private colleges, and an Internet search. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide.

Use and consumption of alcohol prohibited in residence halls, at the university arena, and at open-air events. It is also prohibited at university events whether held on or off campus, but university may approve its use at certain authorized events.

Anderson College

South Carolina

On-campus possession and use of alcoholic beverages prohibited. Violators are subject to fines, among other things.

Anderson University

Indiana

On- and off-campus purchase, possession, or use of alcoholic beverages prohibited. Individuals who drink alcoholic beverages off campus and return to campus are subject to disciplinary action, and alcoholic beverage containers found in rooms, cars, etc., are considered evidence of drinking by the occupants. Alcoholic beverage containers, posters, and other items advertising alcoholic beverages may not be displayed openly.

Ashland University

Ohio

Consumption, possession, sale, and distribution of alcohol by students, faculty, and staff prohibited on university property. Violators are subject to a range of disciplinary sanctions.

An off-campus university-related activities is any activity sponsored by the university or by any organization recognized by the university, or an activity at which one or more persons represent the university or one of its recognized organizations. Violators are subject to disciplinary actions ranging from censure to expulsion.

*Bloomsburg University

Pennsylvania

Alcohol consumption, use, and sale prohibited on campus, and in any university-owned building, except in the private residences of those university officials and employees required to live on university property. Violators are subject to a range of penalties.

Bridgewater College

Virginia

On-campus use, possession, or distribution of alcoholic beverages prohibited. Violators are subject to a range of penalties, including fines and suspension.

Carthage College

Wisconsin

Possession, manufacture, sale, use, consumption, or delivery of alcoholic beverages prohibited on campus. (The college reserves the right to serve alcoholic beverages, at its discretion, at events on or off campus to individuals who are of legal drinking age.)

*Chadron State College

Nebraska

Possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages prohibited on property belonging to the Nebraska State College System, but college president may authorize possession and use at a substantive event or program, such as a banquet, official entertainment, or reception.

Chowan

North Carolina

On-campus use, possession, consumption, and sale of alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beer prohibited.

Earlham College

Indiana

Alcohol use and consumption prohibited at all college-sponsored student events, and on campus grounds, including college-owned student housing, but excluding private residences. Violators are subject to a range of disciplinary sanctions.

Eastern Mennonite University

Virginia

On-campus alcoholic possession and use prohibited. Violators are subject to a range of penalties, including expulsion.

Landmark College

Vermont

Alcohol possession, manufacture, sale, and use prohibited on university campus, including residence halls. Violation is grounds for dismissal.

Lipscomb University

Tennessee

All students, regardless of age, are prohibited from buying, possessing, or consuming alcoholic beverages in any circumstance and may not possess alcoholic beverage containers (e.g., kegs, beer cans or bottles, liquor bottles, etc.). In addition, students are prohibited from patronizing bars or other establishments or events whose principal purpose is the serving of alcohol.

Mars Hill

North Carolina

On-campus possession and use of alcoholic beverages prohibited.

Meredith

North Carolina

Possession and use of alcohol prohibited on college premises and at college-sponsored events. Violators are subject to a range of penalties, including suspension or expulsion.

Methodist College

North Carolina

On-campus possession of alcoholic beverages prohibited.

*Mississippi State University

Mississippi

Sale, possession, or consumption of alcoholic beverages, including beer and wine prohibited on campus. Student organization funds may not be used to buy alcohol. Violators are subject to criminal and university disciplinary procedures.

North Greenville College 

South Carolina

Alcohol possession, manufacture, sale, and use prohibited on university campus, including residence halls. Violators are subject to expulsion, among other disciplinary measures.

*Oklahoma State

Oklahoma

With limited exceptions, beer and alcohol are not allowed on campus. Violators are subject to a range of penalties and may become ineligible for federal student aid.

Peace College

North Carolina

Use, possession, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages prohibited on campus property.

*Portland State University

Oregon

Alcohol use on university property and grounds and at university-sponsored events is prohibited. But, students over age 21 and faculty may get prior permission from provost or vice provost to possess alcohol at certain events.

*University of Missouri

Missouri

Use or possession of alcoholic beverages on all university property prohibited, except in the president's and chancellor's residence. The sale, use, or possession of alcohol may be allowed in certain places and instances, but only by appropriate university approval and any use is subject to all legal requirements. Such places include university alumni centers, faculty clubs, or other designated facilities, and for single events and recurring similar events in designated conference, meeting, or dining facilities provided by university food service.

Wingate

North Carolina

On-campus use and possession of alcoholic beverages prohibited. Violators are subject to a range of penalties.

Wisconsin Lutheran College

Wisconsin

Use and possession of alcoholic beverages prohibited on campus, in residence halls, or at college-sponsored student events. Possession or knowledge of the presence of alcoholic beverages is considered grounds for suspension or expulsion. Immoderate and intoxicating off-campus use of alcohol is reason for counseling and may become grounds for disciplinary action or expulsion.
