SCHOOL START TIMES

By: Jennifer Gelb, Research Attorney

You asked for a legislative history of bills regarding the time that Connecticut schools may start classes and articles on this topic.

Senator Kevin Sullivan proposed a bill in the 2001 session that would have prohibited schools from holding classes before 8:30 a.m. It was the first bill to address school start times. The Legislative Commissioners Office drafted the bill, S.B. 14, and the Education Committee held a public hearing on the issue. No further action was taken.

Enclosed please find a copy of the bill and articles concerning school start times.
