PEOPLE IN PRISON, ON PAROLE, OR ON PROBATION | ||

You asked for updated statistics on the number of people in prison, on parole, and on probation for conviction of a felony. You want the gender and racial breakdown for each category.
Approximately 50,000 convicted felons are in prison, on parole, and on probation, based on the most recent figures available in each of the three categories (see Table 1). The number includes:
1. 13,030 of the sentenced people in prison;
2. 1,558 on parole; and
3. 35,734 adults on probation.
The figure for those incarcerated does not include those who are accused and awaiting trial. The gender and racial breakdown is for those convicted of a felony or unclassified crime. There are another 1,284 people in prison for conviction of misdemeanors who are not affected by the forfeiture law.
Virtually all the people on parole have committed a felony. According to Brian Anderson of the Board of Parole, it is rare that anyone would be on parole who has not been convicted of a felony. It would only be possible if a person were convicted of a number of misdemeanors with tandem sentences.
The most recent figures for those on probation are from the end of 1999 and typically the numbers change very little over the course of the year. Of the over 55,000 on probation, 65% or 35,734 are there because they have committed a felony. This number includes only those who are 18 years old and older.
Table 1 shows the most recent totals available for adults incarcerated, on parole, and on probation, with a breakdown by gender and race.
