As part of its mission to positively affect the advancement of the
state's Latino and Puerto Rican communities, the LPRAC has established a
firm set of legislative priorities. It is the belief of the LPRAC that
testifying and advocating for change in these areas will affect the lives of thousands of Latinos in
communities
throughout the state.
In 2008 the LPRAC will focus its energy on affecting the following:
Education
o
Support the creation of universal pre-school education
o
Support the Multicultural Education reform legislation
o
Enhancement of a pedagogically appropriate secondary education
curriculum
o
Increase financial aid resources for post secondary education
o
Improve truancy reporting & prevent changes to the “in-school”
suspension law
Economic Development
o
Support the passage of a State Earned Income Credit Tax
o
Reform Connecticut’s Business Entity Tax
o
Increase financial assistance to counter act high energy costs
Health
o
Support the passage of universal heath care legislation
o
Support funds for interpreters under Medicaid and linguistic access in
emergency hospitals
o
Protect and enhance funding for persons with HIV/AIDS
o
Restore continuous eligibility for HUSKY recipients
Housing
o
Strengthen state anti-predatory lending law & provide foreclosure
assistance
Judicial Reform
o
Improve legal representation of abused or neglected children
o
Increase court interpreters in the judicial system
o
Diversify the court system by appointing additional Latino judges
Immigration
o
Support Comprehensive Immigration Reform at the federal level
o
Support the in-state tuition bill
