Commissioner

Carlos E. Candal has been practicing law for over fourteen years and currently manages a solo practice in New Haven, Connecticut.

He grew up in a small Northeast Pennsylvania coal mining town as a first generation American. His parents, both medical doctors, immigrated from Argentina in the 1960’s and settled in that region around 1970, raising six children before moving back to Buenos Aires in the mid 1980’s with his five siblings. He, on the other hand, stayed in the United States and traveled to Florida to attend college and pursue a career as a professional baseball player. He eventually received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration while majoring in Finance at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. He paid for the majority of my studies through a baseball scholarship.

In 1991 he attended law school at Quinnipiac University School of Law and received his Juris Doctor in 1994. In January of 1995 he was offered a position with the Hartford Public Defender’s Office where he represented indigent individuals for approximately five years. This experience included representing clients in all aspects of criminal matters ranging from minor motor vehicle infractions to homicide, from arraignment through trial.

In November, 1999 he founded the Law Offices of Carlos Candal, LLC in New Haven, Connecticut. His firm specializes in immigration law, criminal law and appeals in state and federal court, as well as personal injury matters. The majority of his clients are from the Latino community.

In addition, he currently serves as a Member of the Board of Directors for Centro San Jose, a Non-Profit Community Agency located in New Haven, Connecticut. He is also an active member of AILA, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, which is a national association of over 10,000 immigration lawyers who meet several times a year through local and national chapters.

His wife Sharon, also an attorney, works for Comcast Cable Television as a representative in their Governmental Affairs Division. They reside in Cheshire, Connecticut with their three young children. Their oldest daughter Emily attends the third grade.
