A special session of the Connecticut General Assembly in June 2007 included passage of major legislation aimed at ending childhood lead poisoning. Gov. M. Jodi Rell signed the bill into law on June 26, 2007.

The new law will require all Connecticut children to be screened for lead poisoning at ages 12 months and 36 months. Currently, screening is required only for children on Medicaid; as a result, Connecticut’s overall screening rate has been less than 50 percent.

In addition, the law will require local health directors to perform property inspections whenever they find a child’s blood-lead level has reached 15 micrograms per deciliter. Currently, inspections are required for readings of 20 ug//dl or higher.
