"The American Divide"
On October 6, 2009 WCSU convened a panel of citizens and experts to discuss the case of Henry Louis Gates, the African American professor from Harvard who was arrested in his home over the summer, along with the resulting discussion of race that the issue spurred across the country. Panelists generally agreed that race and sensitivity toward the subject should be fully discussed, and people of different backgrounds must try to understand others' perspectives before race becomes a non-issue in the United States.

PROFILING ARTICLE OMITS DETAILS
A recent Hartford Courant article (Profiling Law Unravels (7-28-09) attempts to illuminate the failures of the state's racial profiling legislation but implicates the African American Affairs Commission (AAAC) as a major cause. This account failed to delve deeper.
The Commission never received any money from the State of Connecticut to successfully complete this mandate. At last estimate, the statistical analysis for the racial profiling report would cost approximately $600,000. The Commission's budget is $ 354,000.
The Commission sought out and received the preliminary approval for a $580,000 grant from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration. However since all funds would be reimbursed by the federal government, an initial outlay for costs would be required. The Office of Policy and Management through the Office of Legislative
Management informed the AAAC that it could not be the fiscal agent since the grant exceeded the Commission's budget.
The racial profiling project is the victim of bureaucratic quagmires. More than a year ago, the contracts were drawn up, the experts identified, a plan of action was
in place, and most importantly, the federal government was ready to hand over the money! It seems odd that even in this down economy the State of Connecticut
has no urgency in clearing the way to receive it.

Autism a national crisis for families
More Info
Autism has become a national crisis for families. Since the early 1990’s, the rate of autism has increased with boy’s outnumbering girls four to one. In 2007, the Centers for Disease Control reported that 1 in 150 children are diagnosed with autism. This has parents struggling for answers. Everything from environmental factors to diet and nutrition have been in the media. Parents have found many different treatment options, including Gluten-Free diets, that have shown great improvement for some children.

The HARTFORD GIRLS TRAVEL BASKETBALL will conduct our 1st Annual Thanksgiving Kickoff Tournament to be held at HARTFORD PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL
More Info
The tournament is for ALL GIRLS or BOYS Travel basketball teams in the 5th thru 8th grade divisions. In all over 40 teams will compete over this weekend.
Since 2002, HARTFORD GIRLS TRAVEL BASKETBALL has fielded individual basketball teams for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. We are proud to say that 100% of our players are from the Hartford Public School System. We are also proud to say that the participants from our first 5 years gained valuable playing experience from this opportunity they never had in the past. But, more important they developed self-confidence, sportsmanship, social and life skills they can carry with them forever.
Our teams participate annually in travel leagues and basketball camps from November through June. Our goals are to continue to grow each year and provide more opportunities to even more students. In addition to sport opportunities we also provide tutoring sessions to students that need help academically. We believe in order for these kids to fully develop and aspire for college they will need to be strong academically as well as athletically. Many of our former players are now playing for the Hartford Public School Systems’ High Schools and because of our educational tutoring some have continued at the collegiate level
