OLR Bill Analysis
AN ACT CONCERNING LOCALLY GROWN POULTRY IN CONNECTICUT FOOD MARKETS.
By law, certain poultry processing facilities are approved to sell food to household consumers, restaurants, hotels, and boarding houses. This bill allows these facilities to sell poultry to retail food establishments (e. g. , grocery stores) also. The facilities must (1) meet applicable criteria for federal Food Safety and Inspection Service exemptions and (2) pass state Department of Agriculture inspections.
Under the law, “poultry” means any species of domestic fowl, including chickens, turkeys, ostriches, emus, rheas, cassowaries, waterfowl, and game birds raised for food production, breeding, exhibition, or sale.
