TOWN OF RESIDENCE OF INMATES

You asked for a breakdown of the total incarcerated population and each prison facility's population by the inmates' town of residence.

SUMMARY

According to the Department of Correction (DOC), there were 16,577 inmates incarcerated on August 16, 2012. Of these inmates, 15,759 (95%) reported a Connecticut town of residence at their time of admission. The five towns with the largest number of incarcerated inmates are Hartford (2,245), New Haven (1,841), Bridgeport (1,771), Waterbury (1,471), and New Britain (754). The towns with the smallest number are New Canaan, Sherman, and Union (0 each) and Colebrook, Cornwall, Eastford, Lyme, Roxbury, and Warren (one each). In addition, 802 inmates reported an out-of-state address as their residence and DOC reported 16 inmates with an unknown or unrecorded address.

Below we provide a breakdown of each prison facility's population by the inmates' town of residence, a breakdown of the total population by the inmates' town of residence, and the location of each prison facility.

INMATES' TOWN OF RESIDENCE

On August 16, 2012, 16 DOC prison facilities housed inmates. Table 1 displays the total number of inmates in each of these facilities and how many inmates reported each of Connecticut's 169 towns as their residence at the time of admission. Table 1 also displays the total number of inmates incarcerated by town.
