OLR BACKGROUNDER: CONNECTICUT PRISON POPULATION OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS | ||

This Backgrounder provides statistics on how the prison population has changed over the last five years. It updates OLR report 2011-R-0014.
SUMMARY
On January 1, 2012, Connecticut's prison population stood at 17,023. A day earlier, the population reached its lowest total at any time during the last five years: 17,017. The sentenced population also reached its lowest point that day: 12,955 inmates
Over a five year period, from January 1, 2007 to January 1, 2012, the Department of Correction's daily incarcerated population report showed that:
1. the total incarcerated population varied from a low of 17,017 inmates on December 31, 2011 to a high of 19,894 inmates on February 1, 2008;
2. the sentenced inmate population varied from a low of 12,955 on December 31, 2011 to a high of 15,465 on February 8, 2008; and
3. the unsentenced inmate population varied from a low of 3,811 on April 30, 2011 to a high of 4,772 on September 21, 2010.
TABLE
Table 1 displays the total incarcerated, sentenced, and unsentenced populations on the first of each month since January 1, 2007 and on the dates of certain events during this time period.
