NUMBER OF CALEA-ACCREDITED POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN CONNECTICUT

By: Veronica Rose, Chief Analyst

You want to know how many Connecticut police departments are nationally accredited and how many are internationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

CALEA is an international credentialing organization that offers accreditation programs for public safety agencies. Its primary program is law enforcement education. According to a CALEA official, to the extent that CALEA is an international organization, its accreditation could be viewed as international, but the commission does not define its accreditation as “national” or “international.” Rather, departments that have successfully completed any CALEA accreditation program are CALEA-accredited.

Currently, 14 Connecticut police departments are CALEA-accredited in law enforcement, including 11 municipal police departments and the Connecticut State Police, University of Connecticut Police, and State Capitol Police. In addition, three departments—Madison, Simsbury, and Central Connecticut State University—are enrolled in the CALEA law enforcement accreditation program but not yet accredited. (The Connecticut Police Officers Standards and Training Council and the Judicial Marshal Academy are CALEA-accredited training academies.)

Table 1 shows the Connecticut police departments accredited by CALEA.
