NURSING HOMES ON STRIKE

By: John Kasprak, Senior Attorney

You asked for the number of Connecticut nursing homes with workers currently on strike and the number of patients affected.

Nurses, nursing assistants, and elder care support staff at four skilled nursing homes operated by Vernon-based Spectrum Healthcare remain on a strike that began in mid-April of this year. The four homes are Park Place Health Center in Hartford, Hilltop Health Center in Ansonia, Birmingham Health Center in Derby, and Laurel Hill Healthcare in Winsted. The approximately 400 striking workers are represented by the Service Employees International Union District 1199.

While we do not have the exact number of patients per nursing home, these four facilities have a total of 435 licensed beds. Table 1 shows the total number of beds and rooms for each facility.
