CAMP RELL RENOVATIONS

By: Veronica Rose, Principal Analyst

You asked for information on construction and renovations taking place at Camp Rell, including the cost and source of funding.

The Military Department is building (1) a 50,000 square-foot readiness center, which will be used to provide education and training programs for Connecticut-based armed forces, and (2) a 100,000 square-foot regional training institute (RTI), which will be used to provide education and training programs primarily for officers, noncommissioned officers, warrant officers, and military police from New England and New York. State and local government agencies will also be able to use the RTI site for law enforcement and disaster response training.

According to the department, the readiness center will provide support services for two National Guard units: a military police battalion headquarters and a military police headquarters company. It will house administrative offices, classrooms, a library, a fitness center, a kitchen, and service and storage areas. The construction is being paid for with $ 16,800,000 in federal funds and $ 2,300,000 in state funds.

The RTI will house administrative armory space and training, housing, and storage areas. The construction is being paid for with $ 28,000,000 in federal funds and $ 4,000,000 state funds.
