STATE FUNDING FOR MAGNET SCHOOL TUITION

By: Judith Lohman, Chief Analyst

You asked if there is any state funding available to local boards of education to pay magnet school tuition.

There is no specific state grant to local boards of education for magnet school tuition. But boards may use their Education Cost Sharing (ECS) funds to help pay tuition. School districts currently receive ECS grants for their students attending interdistrict magnet schools, while the magnet school also receives a state operating grant for the same students. The state magnet school operating grant helps reduce the tuition that magnets schools charge their sending districts.

The state's system for funding interdistrict magnet schools is described more fully in OLR Report 2008-R-0684 (copy enclosed).
