AN ACT CONCERNING THE IMPOSITION OF SERVICE FEES BY MUNICIPALITIES.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:
Section 1. (NEW) (Effective April 1, 2009, and applicable to assessment years commencing on or after October 1, 2008) Any municipality may, by vote of its legislative body or, in a municipality where the legislative body is a town meeting, by vote of the board of selectmen, provide that service fees for police and fire protection and trash removal may be charged on any or all property exempted from property taxes pursuant to subdivision (7), (8) or (16) of section 12-81 of the general statutes. Any service fee imposed shall be uniform and based upon the square footage of such property.
This act shall take effect as follows and shall amend the following sections: | ||

Statement of Purpose:
To allow municipalities to impose service fees for police and fire protection and trash removal on certain tax-exempt properties.
