You asked for statistics related to burglary crimes, including the number of people in prison for burglary.

SUMMARY

Using information from databases maintained by the Office of Fiscal Analysis, we obtained statistics related to burglary crimes.

On August 1, 2007, there were 903 people in prison with burglary as their most serious offense. This includes those incarcerated while awaiting trial as well as those convicted and sentenced.

On June 1, 2007, there were 3,168 probation cases with burglary as the primary charge. It is not clear how many people are on probation for burglary because it is possible for a person to have more than one probation case.

Judicial case data shows that the courts handled 4,005 burglary offenses in FY 07. From FY 02 to FY 07, this was the lowest number. The highest occurred in FY 03 with 5,686 offenses.

Table 1 below displays the incarcerated population under each of the burglary statutes on August 1, 2007.

PROBATION CASES

On June 1, 2007, there were 55,804 probationers with open cases under supervision. There were 71,145 open cases associated with these clients. Each case has a primary charge. Thus, some probationers have more than one open case
