TRACTOR-TRAILER TRAINING SCHOOL ATTENDEES WHO GET TRAINING RELATED JOBS
| ||
By: John Moran, Principal Analyst
You asked if the state tracks whether the dislocated workers and others who get state assistance to attend tractor-trailer training school get jobs in the field once the training is completed.
The Department of Labor (DOL) provided data from the five regional workforce development boards showing that for fiscal year 2006, 65% of those who completed tractor-trailer training obtained a training-related job (112 out of 172 people).
The information comes from programs receiving federal Workforce Investment Act, funds which can be used to help dislocated workers, incumbent workers (those with a job who receive training to advance in the same field), and other eligible individuals. DOL and the regional workforce boards have approved six vendors around the state to provide tractor-trailer related training, most of this is training to receive a commercial driver's license.
Depending upon the individual's eligibility and the policies of the regional board involved, the program may pay for all or part of the tuition and related costs for an individual to go to school.
Table 1 provides a regional breakdown of those participating in these programs.
