HB-7085

AN ACT CONCERNING THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS FOR PROSECUTION OF CERTAIN SEXUAL ASSAULT OFFENSES USING DNA EVIDENCE.

AMENDMENT

LCO No.: 7504

File Copy No.: 601

House Calendar No.: 482

OFA Fiscal Note

MINIMAL COST

The amendment requires the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to post on-line pictures of sex offenders who have failed to register. Currently, there are approximately 21 individuals who are required to register with DPS, who have not done so. DPS has a photograph of the majority of the registrants who have failed to register. Of the registrants that have failed to register, and do not have a photograph, DPS would be required to commit minimal overtime resources on locating a photograph. Additionally, the amendment requires DPS to establish a hotline where citizens can report information on sex offenders who have failed to register. Currently, DPS posts a number on-line to contact a police officer with such information. The language in the amendment is unclear as to whether current practice is acceptable. If not, DPS would be required to establish a new hot line, which would result in a minimal cost.
