1. How many temporary workers does the Judicial Branch employ? Is it the same number every year?
As of November 8, 2006, the Judicial Branch had 428 temporary employees on the payroll. This includes employees who may work one day a week and employees who work all five days. According to the Judicial Branch, the number of temporary workers could change but has been similar to the current number for some time.
2. What are they paid? Have they had any raises in recent years?
The Judicial Branch currently employs temporary workers in 32 different positions. The chart below shows the positions with at least 10 temporary employees, their hourly rate, and the effective date for that pay rate.

3. Do they get any benefits or paid days off?
Temporary employees are eligible for health insurance after working six months with a work schedule of at least 50% of a full-time schedule. They are immediately eligible for retirement credit. Temporary employees do not accrue vacation, sick, or personal leave time and do not have any paid days off.

4. What are their duties?
The Judicial Branch currently employs temporary workers in 32 different positions. The chart above and attached documents display the job titles for these employees.
5. Are they doing the same work as permanent employees?
Yes. According to the Judicial Branch, temporary employees do the same work as permanent employees for the most part. For example, a temporary administrative secretary does work similar to an administrative secretary.
6. Have some of the same employees returned for the temporary work for years?
Yes. According to the Judicial Branch, some temporary employees have worked for the Branch for seven or eight years.
