FOREIGN-BORN STATE AND MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS

By: Sandra Norman-Eady, Chief Attorney

You asked for a list of foreign-born Connecticut state and municipal elected officials. For the purpose of this report, we consider officials born in the U. S. territory of Puerto Rico as being foreign born.

The State Register and Manual, published by the Office of the Secretary of the State, contains the birthplaces of elected state, but not municipal, officials. We are unaware of any secondary source, including, the Council of Connecticut Municipalities, with this information on elected municipal officials.

According to the State Register and Manual, none of the currently sitting statewide or constitutional officers were born outside of the U. S. Of the 187 state legislators, 17 were born outside of the U. S. All 17 are members of the House of Representatives. Table 1 shows these 17 legislators and their place of birth arranged in the order of their Assembly district. The foreign places of birth are Puerto Rico (5), Italy (5), Germany (2), West Germany (2), Greece (1), Lebanon (1), and Peru (1).
