MODEL GUIDELINES FOR VOLUNTEER EMERGENCY PERSONNEL.

A new law requires the state fire administrator, within available appropriations, to develop model guidelines by January 1, 2007, that municipalities with paid or emergency personnel may use to enter into agreements allowing people to serve as volunteer emergency personnel during their personal time (PA 06-22, effective upon passage).

FIREFIGHTERS AND BICYCLE OPERATIONS ON HIGHWAYS

A new law exempts firefighters and emergency services personnel (just like police officers) from state laws and local regulations governing bicycle operations on highways, under certain specified circumstances. Among other things, they must be at least age 16; complete a basic bicycle patrol course certified by the Police Officers Standards and Training Council, or an equivalent course; and wear a distinctive uniform and use an audible signal, such as a siren, whistle, or bell (PA 06-72, effective October 1, 2006).
