LENGTH OF SENTENCE SERVED BY OFFENDERS CHARGED WITH CERTAIN GUN-RELATED OFFENSES.
| ||
By: Christopher Reinhart, Senior Attorney
You asked how much of their sentence people convicted of certain gun-related offenses serve. This report updates OLR report 99-R-0284.
Nineteen inmates convicted of five different gun-related crimes were released last year from Department of Correction (DOC) facilities. Inmates can be in prison for more than one offense. The controlling offense is usually the most serious one with the most serious sentence and is used to record the inmate in the computer system for statistical purposes.
These 19 inmates are based on DOC's search of its computer database for inmates whose controlling offense was one of nine gun-related offenses:
1. committing an A, B, or C felony with an assault weapon (CGS § 53-202j);
2. committing an A, B, or C felony with a firearm (CGS § 53-202k);
3. 1st degree manslaughter with a firearm (CGS § 53a-55a);
4. 2nd degree manslaughter with a firearm (CGS § 53a-56a);
5. 2nd degree assault with a firearm (CGS § 53a-60a);
6. 2nd degree assault of an elderly, blind, disabled, pregnant, or mentally retarded person with a firearm (CGS § 53a-60c);
7. 1st degree kidnapping with a firearm (CGS § 53a-92a);
8. 2nd degree kidnapping with a firearm (CGS § 53a-94a); and
9. 2nd degree burglary with a firearm (CGS § 53a-102a).
The table below displays the information on the 19 inmates including their controlling offense, length of sentence, DOC entry and release dates, length of time served, and percent of sentence served.
