CONNECTICUT JOB GROWTH RANKINGS (1990-2005)

By: Natalie Wagner, Legislative Fellow

You asked for Connecticut's job growth rankings compared to other states for each year from 1990 through 2005 using the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics employment numbers.

We looked at Connecticut's job growth performance for the period beginning January 1990 and ending December 2005. Its national job growth ranking has ranged from a high of 18 to a low of 48, with a median rank of 43. Its ranking in 2005 was 42, with an increase in employment of 0. 64% in that year.

The number of people employed in Connecticut fell from 1990 through 1992. Employment then rose steadily from 1993 through 2000. In 1996, Connecticut was ranked eighteenth in the nation, its highest ranking during this 16-year period. In that year, the number of people employed in the state rose 2. 37%. From 2001 through 2003, employment was down, then rose again from 2004 through 2005. Connecticut's lowest ranking was 48. This occurred in four years ― 1992 (-1. 06% growth), 1993 (0. 97%), 1997 (1. 61%), and 2002 (-1. 31%).

Table 1 shows Connecticut's rank and percent of job growth by year from 1990 through 2005. Graph 1 shows Connecticut's employment trend from 1990 through 2005.

1 We determined job growth rank by calculating for each state the percent of change in the number of people employed from December to December as reported by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics and sorting in descending order. The 1990 ranking represents the percent of change in the number of people employed from January to December of 1990.
