• The board consists of nine members.

• The governor appoints eight members for six-year terms; students elect the ninth member for a two-year term.

• One chamber confirms.

• The board governs Charter Oak College, which offers an alternative, personalized approach to college education for adult learners. The college offers degrees by validating credits based assessments of student portfolios and through standardized and special examination. The college also operates the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium.

QUESTIONS

1. What do you see as the board’s mission and what special skills and experiences do you bring to the board that will help it fulfill this mission?

2. How has the growing array of distance learning opportunities affected Charter Oak students? How has it affected the college’s operations? What do you see is the board’s role in the Distance Learning Consortium?

3. How many Charter Oak students are from minority and immigrant communities? How does the college market itself in those communities?

4. How well does Charter Oak College coordinate with the state’s traditional two- and four-year colleges?

5. What role does Charter Oak College play in better preparing Connecticut students for the workplace? Does the college work with the Labor or Economic Development departments in helping students plan their course work?

6. Does the college provide a sufficient amount of financial aid for its students? If not, how can this be attained in this budget environment?
