TECHNICAL SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIPS AND CREDITED HOURS

By: Soncia Coleman, Research Analyst

You asked whether the hours of training earned by students at Connecticut’s technical high schools automatically counts towards their apprenticeships and whether students are made aware of the policy on credit hours.

According to the Connecticut State Department of Education (SDE), the respective employers determine whether a student’s technical school training counts towards the hours required for an apprenticeship. For example, the Electrical Union normally does not award any hours to technical high school graduates. Some of the licensed trade instructors make this clear to their students, but the SDE was not able to determine if all instructors follow this practice.
