TEMPERATURE RELATED SCHOOL CLOSINGS

By: Soncia Coleman, Research Analyst

You asked if there are any regulations governing the closing of schools in Connecticut based on the temperature.

There are no regulations governing weather related school closings in Connecticut. Barring an official state of emergency, all weather related school closure decisions are made on the local level. Connecticut law only sets the minimum required hours of instruction. Each school year, districts must provide no less than 180 days of actual school sessions for grades kindergarten to 12. They must provide at least 900 hours of actual school work for full-day kindergarten and grades one to 12, inclusive, and 450 hours of half-day kindergarten. School districts can not count more than seven hours of actual school work in any school day towards the total required for the school year. If weather conditions result in an early dismissal or a delayed opening of school, a school district, which maintains separate morning and afternoon half-day kindergarten sessions, may provide either a morning or afternoon half-day kindergarten session (CGS §10-16). When public school sessions are cancelled for reasons of inclement weather or otherwise, no rescheduled sessions can be held on Saturday or Sunday (CGS §10-15).
