FIRE TRAINING COURSES

By: Soncia Coleman, Research Analyst

You asked if Connecticut’s community colleges offer fire training courses and if neighboring states offer such courses.

According to the Connecticut Department of Higher Education’s online index of programs, several Connecticut community colleges offer fire related courses. Capital, Naugatuck Valley, Norwalk, Three Rivers, and Tunxis community colleges each offer a two-year associates degree program in Fire Technology and Administration, with classes such as Introduction to Fire Technology and Codes and Standards. The program provides training to students interested in employment with fire insurance companies or industries involved in fire prevention and protection. The program was developed in cooperation with state agencies, fire insurance companies, and several fire prevention organizations, including the Connecticut Fire Chief’s Association, the Connecticut Fire Marshals’ Association, the Connecticut Fire Department Instructors’ Association, and the Connecticut State Firemen’s Association.

Additionally, Capital Community College offers a 9-credit certificate program intended for firefighters called “Fire Technology and Administration: Emergency Management Response. ” The program teaches the science of planning for, responding to, and recovering from disasters. It includes the following classes: Principle/Process of Emergency Management, Specific Events and Contingency Planning, and

Living in a Hazardous Environment. According to the school’s business office, the cost of the program is $ 913. 25 (including fees). Additional information about programs offered by the community colleges can be found at www. commnet. edu.

Neighboring states offer similar programs, but as in Connecticut, offerings vary by school. The Community College of Rhode Island offers an associates degree program in fire science for individuals interested in or already serving in the firefighting service or related fields. New York community colleges offer certificate programs in fire science and fire protection technology and two-year degrees in fire protection technology and fire and occupational safety. Some Massachusetts community colleges offer courses in fire science as well.
