Assisted living facilities with separate Alzheimer's/dementia units

You asked how many assisted living facilities in Connecticut have separate Alzheimer’s/dementia units. Assisted living facilities are entities that serve elderly people who need help with activities of daily living but do not need nursing home care. In Connecticut, they must provide a separate apartment with a bath and access to kitchen facilities, three meals a day in a common dining room, and other core services, as well as help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, or transferring from a bed to a chair.

To the best of our knowledge, 34 assisted living facilities in the state have separate units for people with Alzheimer’s/dementia or related diseases. They are virtually all locked, but a number have secured garden areas where people can walk. In addition, eight facilities are entirely dedicated to patients with Alzheimer’s disease/ dementia and related diseases. These are Arden Courts of Avon, Seabury Meadows in Bloomfield, Arden Courts Manor Care Health Services in Farmington, Arden Courts in Hamden, The Greens at Greenwich, The Village at Waveny in New Canaan, the Alzheimer’s Resource Center in Plantsville (Southington), and The Atrium in Rocky Hill. Other facilities may have special programs for people with Alzheimer’s, but not separate units.

Table 1 lists these facilities by town and indicates which ones are entirely dedicated to people with Alzheimer’s/dementia. It is based on information we received from the Alzheimer’s Association of Connecticut and our own telephone contacts with some of the facilities listed. There may be others we have not found. The Department of Public Health (DPH), which licenses assisted living services agencies (ALSAs) that provide the services at the facilities, was unable to provide us with an authoritative list of facilities that have separate Alzheimer’s/dementia units. The assisted living facilities themselves are not licensed but must meet certain requirements to be considered “managed residential communities” (MRCs) in order for the ALSAs to perform their services there. Currently, 105 MRCs in the state provide assisted living services using 69 licensed ALSAs, according to a DPH listing.
