JUDICIAL DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITIES IN OTHER STATES | ||

You asked whether the Judicial Department is responsible for probation, juvenile lock-up, adult lock-up, or alternative incarceration in other states.
In 11 states, the courts (either state or local) are responsible for adult probation services. These states are:
1. Arizona,
2. Colorado,
3. Hawaii,
4. Illinois,
5. Indiana,
6. Kansas,
7. Massachusetts,
8. Nebraska,
9. New Jersey,
10. South Dakota, and
11. West Virginia
In an additional four states, courts share this responsibility with the executive branch:
1. California,
2. Ohio,
3. Pennsylvania, and

In seven states, the corrections agency is responsible for juvenile services:
1. Louisiana,
2. Maine,
3. Minnesota,
4. New Jersey,
5. North Dakota,
6. South Dakota, and
7. West Virginia
