GUN PERMITS

By: Veronica Rose, Principal Analyst

You want to know why (1) the State Police does not accept cash to renew gun permits and (2) the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not accept cash at their mobile renewal stations for license renewal.

It is a question of security, according to both the State Police and DMV. The State Police said that the process is not designed to handle cash. “It comes down to a security issue. There would be too many chances for theft or loss. . . [and] accountability would be a nightmare. ” “[Also], the process would take too long. We [would] have to forward the money to another agency, therefore it would create more steps in the process and a further time delay. To accept cash would cause additional negative fiscal impact. ” The State Police notifies applicants in advance of its no cash policy. The renewal notice that the division sends to applicants contains the following provision: "$ 35. 00 check or money order only, payable to DPS. ”

According to DMV, the buses that process licenses are sometimes stationed for up to eight hours at fixed locations without any security at the site. The agency felt that it would not be prudent to allow its employees to collect and hold cash under these circumstances. As a convenience to customers, the buses, unlike DMV branch offices, accept credit cards.
