MEDICAL MALPRACTICE INSURANCE COMPANIES | ||

You asked how many insurance companies in Connecticut write medical malpractice insurance in other states, but not in Connecticut.
According to the Connecticut Insurance Department, there are 64 property and casualty insurance companies and six property and casualty reinsurance companies domiciled (based) in Connecticut. All of these companies, except for two, are authorized to write liability insurance (other than auto). (See Tables 1 and 2 below. ) Medical malpractice insurance is one type of coverage under the liability insurance line of business. However, only one Connecticut-domiciled company, Connecticut Medical Insurance Company (CMIC), currently writes medical malpractice insurance. CMIC only writes the coverage in Connecticut.
There are 375 property and casualty insurance and reinsurance foreign companies (i. e. , domiciled in a state other than Connecticut) doing business in Connecticut that are authorized to write liability insurance (other than auto). Only three of these foreign companies currently write medical malpractice insurance in Connecticut: Medical Protective, an Indiana-based company, ProSelect, a Massachusetts company, and Preferred Professional Insurance Company, a Nebraska company. However, the department does not know how many foreign companies write medical malpractice insurance in other states.
The department provided us with a list of all licensed insurance companies doing business in Connecticut. The list includes the company name, address, state of domicile, type of company (e. g. , property and casualty, life and health), and line of business. We will store this list and make it available to you upon request.
